Apple releases macOS Sonoma, with iOS-like widgets and Game Mode

Apple injects a little more iOS into the Mac today with the release of macOS Sonoma, also known as macOS 14.0. This update includes several new features that bring the iOS experience to Mac users.

One notable feature is the introduction of persistent desktop widgets. With Sonoma, users can place iPhone widgets on their Mac without having to install the corresponding apps. This allows for easy access to widgets like weather, calendar, and news right from the desktop.

Another significant change is the new iOS-style lock screen. The lock screen on macOS now resembles the lock screen found on iPhones and iPads, complete with a password field instead of a number pad. However, some users may be left wishing for Face ID on their Macs.

Sonoma also includes a game mode that aims to improve gaming performance on Macs. While Macs have not traditionally been known as gaming machines, Apple’s Game Mode prioritizes game performance by allocating more CPU and GPU power. Additionally, wireless gaming accessories are said to be more responsive with this update.

Other updates included in Sonoma are search filters for iMessage, profiles in Safari, support for web apps in the dock, and more. These updates further enhance the iOS experience on Mac devices and improve overall functionality.

One noteworthy aspect of the Sonoma update is its timing. Apple released iOS 17 just over a week before Sonoma, which is a refreshing change for users who are accustomed to waiting longer for macOS updates. The quick release of Sonoma after iOS 17 allows for a more seamless integration between iOS and macOS.

To download the Sonoma update, users can click on the Apple logo in the top right corner of the screen and navigate to System Settings > General > Software Update. Some users may see a message in the System Settings sidebar, simplifying the update process.

It is important to note that users should perform the update outside of working hours to avoid any potential issues. As always, it is recommended to back up your data before updating any operating system.

In conclusion, macOS Sonoma brings several iOS-inspired features to Mac devices, including persistent desktop widgets, an iOS-style lock screen, and a game mode for improved gaming performance. This update enhances the iOS experience on Macs and further integrates Apple’s ecosystem.
