Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Receives October 2023 Security Update

Samsung users rejoice as the tech giant has been rolling out the much-anticipated October 2023 security update for their Galaxy devices. This update has now reached the original Galaxy S Fan Edition, the Galaxy S20 FE, offering enhanced security features and fixes.

The LTE version of the Galaxy S20 FE, which is powered by the Exynos 990 chipset, is now receiving the update in several countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Mexico, and Switzerland. This firmware update, with the ending version HWI7, focuses solely on improving security and does not introduce any new features.

The October 2023 security patch for Samsung devices addresses critical vulnerabilities found in the core Android operating system, as well as 12 vulnerabilities specific to Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Among these vulnerabilities are risks that could potentially allow unauthorized access to different areas of the software, such as executing malicious code, manipulating Wi-Fi networks, installing unauthorized versions of applications, and more. To ensure user safety, a number of undisclosed vulnerabilities have been kept secret until the update reaches all eligible devices.

Owners of the Galaxy S20 FE can easily check if the update is available for their country by visiting the firmware archive on the Samsung website, or they can try to download it directly from their phone’s Settings menu under Software Update. If preferred, users can also download the complete firmware from the Samsung archive and install it on their device using a Windows PC.

Currently, only the LTE variant of the Galaxy S20 FE is receiving the October security patch, but it is expected that the Snapdragon-powered 5G model will follow suit soon. However, users should not expect an upgrade to Android 14 and One UI 6.0 for either variant. Similar to the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra, the Galaxy S20 FE initially launched with Android 10 and is eligible for three major operating system upgrades.

As Samsung continues to prioritize user security, it is reassuring to see the timely release of security patches and updates for their devices. Users of the Galaxy S20 FE can now enjoy improved protection against potential vulnerabilities, ensuring a safer and more secure user experience.
