Google and HP have announced a strategic partnership to manufacture Chromebooks in India, marking a significant step for the country’s technology and education sectors. The collaboration aims to provide affordable and secure computing options for Indian students, addressing the increasing demand for budget-friendly PCs in the education sector.
The partnership reflects a shared vision between Google and HP to support India’s digital education ecosystem and empower students with affordable and high-quality computing devices. The Chromebooks will be made available to education authorities, schools, and institutions across the nation.
The manufacturing of these Chromebook devices will take place at the Flex factory near Chennai, India. HP has been utilizing this facility for the production of various laptops and desktops since August 2020. Starting from October 2, 2023, the production line will expand to include HP India Chromebooks, catering to the rising demand for cost-effective PCs.
This development not only showcases the growing capabilities of India’s manufacturing industry but also highlights the success of the ‘Make in India’ program. Launched to promote local manufacturing and boost economic growth, the program has achieved remarkable milestones. According to Counterpoint Research, over 2 billion cell phones were manufactured in India between 2014 and 2022 under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, demonstrating a compound annual growth rate of 23 percent.
