Google Pixel Sees Growth in North American Smartphone Market

The Google Pixel smartphone has been steadily gaining traction in the crowded smartphone market, and recent data confirms its growth. According to a report by Canalys, Google Pixel shipments in North America were up to 1.2 million units in the second quarter of 2023. This represents a nearly 60% increase from the previous year, when around 800,000 units were shipped. Furthermore, Google’s market share in North America doubled to 4%, making it the only brand that experienced growth among the top five smartphone brands.

In comparison, other smartphone brands saw a decline in shipments year-over-year. Samsung and Motorola both experienced a 25% decrease, while TCL dropped by 30%. Even Apple, the market leader, saw a 20% drop in shipments. Despite this decline, Apple’s shipments amounted to 14.8 million devices, securing a 54% share of the market.

The overall smartphone market in North America experienced a 12% decline in 2023 compared to the previous year. However, analysts at Canalys expect the market to rebound in the coming months. The launch of Apple’s iPhone 15 lineup and Samsung’s new foldable devices in August is predicted to stimulate consumer upgrades, with Google Pixel also expected to benefit from the market recovery.

According to Canalys, Google Pixel, along with Motorola, has been playing the premiumization game by releasing flagship foldable devices in 2023. These brands are expected to offer attractive holiday deals in the upcoming months, further driving sales.

Looking ahead, Google is set to release its new Pixel 8 series on October 4, which is anticipated to boost sales through the end of the year. This new release, combined with the anticipated market recovery, positions Google Pixel to continue its growth and establish itself as a more significant player in the smartphone industry.

It is worth noting that the competition in the smartphone market remains fierce, with Apple dominating the market share. However, Google Pixel’s recent growth shows that it has the potential to compete with the established brands and attract a substantial customer base. As the smartphone market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Google Pixel and other emerging brands shape the industry landscape.
