Programs tracking misinfo are buckling amid campaign led by Rep. Jim Jordan

by Joey De Leon

An escalating campaign led by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and other Republicans is causing academics, universities, and government agencies to overhaul or end research programs that aim to combat online misinformation. Conservatives accuse these programs of colluding with tech companies to censor right-wing views. The campaign is not only impacting programs that study political falsehoods but also those that examine the quality of medical information online.

Stanford University officials, facing litigation, are considering how to continue their tracking of election-related misinformation through the Election Integrity Partnership (EIP), a consortium that identifies social media conspiracies about voting. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has frozen a $150 million program designed to advance the communication of medical information, citing regulatory and legal threats.

The campaign led by Republicans is hindering efforts to study online falsehoods and is stifling academic research. Social media platforms have reduced their content moderation efforts, even as evidence mounts of increasing covert influence campaigns by Russia and China. Public health officials are also grappling with medical misinformation, particularly as the United States approaches the fall and winter virus season.

Conservatives have long claimed that social media platforms suppress their views, and their efforts to limit content moderation have intensified in recent years. One notable lawsuit, known as Missouri v. Biden, is currently before the Supreme Court. The lawsuit seeks to block a ruling that found government officials likely violated the First Amendment by exerting influence over tech companies’ decisions to remove or suppress content on COVID-19 and elections. The Biden administration argues that injunction contradicts certain First Amendment principles.

The campaign led by Rep. Jim Jordan has resulted in subpoenas and demands for researchers’ communications with the government and social media platforms. Disinformation scholars have also faced lawsuits and public records requests from conservative sympathizers. The outcome of these legal battles will have a significant impact on academic freedom and the ability to combat online misinformation effectively.

The efforts to restrict research programs and academic freedom are a concerning development that threatens the integrity of science. These programs play a crucial role in combating online falsehoods, ensuring the dissemination of accurate medical information, and protecting public health. It is essential to find a balance between protecting free speech and preventing the spread of harmful disinformation. Without robust research programs, it will be challenging to address the rising challenges posed by misinformation, both in the political and medical domains.
